CITRUS BERGAMIA RISSO ET POIT

CITRUS BERGAMIA RISSO ET POIT

Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia Risso et Poit) is a citrus plant that grows almost exclusively in the narrow coastal Calabria region in Southern Italy, which accounts for 80% of the worldwide production of this fruit, due to its sensitivity to peculiar weather and soil conditions in that area. Bergamot juice was traditionally recognized by the local population as a remedy for supporting healthy cholesterol level and cardiovascular health. The juice of the fruit has also been used in Calabrian traditional medicine to treat malaria, and its essential oil is popular in aromatherapy applications.

This fruit is also appreciated for its cosmetic properties, although it was sometimes used for its antiseptic and antibacterial action in ophthalmology, gynecology and dermatology. Bergamot differs from other citrus fruits not only because of the composition of its antioxidant flavonoids, but because of the high presence of these components.
Flavonoids polyphenols such as Naringin and Neohesperin help the control of healthy blood sugar levels and improve multiple aspects of the metabolic syndrome.
